Evaluating Throwing Ability in Baseball
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a quantitative analysis of throwing ability for major league outfielders and catchers. We use detailed game event data to tabulate success and failure events in outfielder and catcher throwing opportunities. We attribute a run contribution to each success or failure which are tabulated for each player in each season. We use four seasons of data to estimate the overall throwing ability of each player using a Bayesian hierarchical model. This model allows us to shrink individual player estimates towards an overall populationmean depending on the number of opportunities for each player. We use the posterior distribution of player abilities from this model to identify players with significant positive and negative throwing contributions. Our results for both outfielders3 and catchers4 are publicly available.

Comparison of three baseball-specific 6-week training programs on throwing velocity in high school baseball players.
Throwing velocity is an important baseball performance variable for baseball pitchers, because greater throwing velocity results in less time for hitters to make a decision to swing. Throwing velocity is also an important baseball performance variable for position players, because greater throwing velocity results in decreased time for a runner to advance to the next base. This study compared t...
متن کاملHumeral Retrotorsion in Collegiate Baseball Pitchers With Throwing-Related Upper Extremity Injury History
BACKGROUND Collegiate baseball pitchers, as well as position players, exhibit increased humeral retrotorsion compared with individuals with no history of overhead sport participation. Whether the humeral retrotorsion plays a role in the development of throwing-related injuries that are prevalent in collegiate baseball pitchers is unknown. HYPOTHESES Humeral retrotorsion will be significantly ...
متن کاملPectoralis Minor Contracture in Throwing Shoulders of Asymptomatic Adolescent Baseball Players
BACKGROUND Although scapular malpositioning is commonly associated with rotational deficits and risk of injury, modifiable causes of such malpositioning in overhead athletes are not well described. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS The purpose of this study was to examine the scapulothoracic profile of adolescent baseball players, specifically, pectoralis minor (PM) length. We hypothesized that PM would be ...
